A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Hotel Indigo Turks & Caicos opens in The Bight.

It was a sunny, breezy, late-winter day when I visited Hotel Indigo Turks & Caicos, just after the official grand opening. With its lengthy upper level balcony and coffee bar and convenience store opening onto Lower Bight Road, the property felt especially welcoming, a part of this original Providenciales settlement. The “Mr. Rogers” ditty of my childhood came to mind: “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.”

For several years I’ve wondered what would become of the erstwhile “Grace Bay Beach Club” building. It was an attractive, unoccupied hotel on a prime stretch of The Bight community, an area that seemed to be growing in popularity each month. The mystery grew deeper when I saw what looked like a ready-made block of hotel rooms placed in front of the existing property.

Hotel Indigo Turks & Caicos guests can lounge in the stunning courtyard infinity pool, the visual centrepiece of the hotel.

During my first visit to Hotel Indigo, it all made sense. The end result is a beautiful courtyard area flanked by guest rooms on two sides. It is a peaceful haven set apart from the bustling neighborhood. There is a large infinity pool with comfy daybeds, an outdoor dining area and bar, and plenty of secluded seating spots for private conversations. Muted pastel tones of turquoise blue and coral pink, with bamboo furniture and tan floor tiles add to the courtyard’s oasis vibe.

Hotel Indigo includes 56 guest rooms with pool or garden views, each with a private balcony or terrace. They are bright, airy, and beautifully designed with a plethora of Caribbean-themed touches, including artwork sporting flamingos and boat cleat-shaped dresser handles. It’s clear that details were well thought out, as I noticed double shower heads, easy to understand water controls, recyclable water bottles in each room, and a signature “Hotel Indigo” scent wafting through the property. Rooms are neat, modern, and comfortable and meet the high standards of IHG, a global hotel group encompassing 20 hotel brands in 6,600 destinations.

Hotel Indigo’s sun-kissed courtyard includes outdoor dining areas and an open-air bar.

Especially important to all involved was creating a sense of community around Hotel Indigo. That’s why Brango, the coffee shop named after the “art of catching up over a drink,” opens onto the courtyard and the roadway. The same with Il Forno restaurant, with its Italian classics and pizza oven. This encourages residents to stop by and guests to feel a part of the neighborhood.

Providenciales’ stunning, award-winning beaches are a short and interesting walk from Hotel Indigo. There is a dedicated beach shuttle too, which brings guests near to the popular Coral Garden Reef snorkeling area. Here, the hotel provides loungers and food and beverage service.

But it’s clear that the courtyard is the heart of Hotel Indigo Turks & Caicos. Because it is perfectly positioned east to west, days start with pastel sunrises and end with flaming sunsets. The outdoor cinema is a comfy corner to watch selected movies, sports events, and cartoons. Just off the courtyard is the well-equipped fitness center, complete with free weights, machines and cardio equipment.

Care has been taken to spotlight local products. The Forbes & Bight boutique and Brango coffee shop feature coffee from TCI Coffee Roasters and Sweet Republic ice cream and desserts. Artisanal drinks by local Cocktail Perfetto are served at the bar; TRIBE bakery makes the sourdough bread and gourmet mushrooms from a local farm are included on pizza and other fare. Events such as a “Barista Classic” workshop and “Mixology Masterclass” are planned as well.

Thinking of one of my family member’s needs reminded me to check the hotel’s wheelchair accessibility. I learned that the ADA-compliant guest rooms are the largest on the property and include every detail to make a stay more comfortable. This includes flat terrain between parking and the entrance, special parking spaces, and easy access throughout the property, including an elevator to all levels.

In a world of cookie-cutter conformity and social isolation, a sense of community is increasingly important. Hotel Indigo has managed to capture it as they welcome guests and island residents to share a “beautiful day in the neighborhood.”
